Still life with Coyote Skull

I got a coyote skull at the evolution store while I was visiting some friends in NYC. Shout out to Matt Hickey for hosting Rachel and I, and also bringing the skull up to RI when I totally forgot it at his apartment. I'd like to do a few of these a week for awhile, since still lives are really one of the best ways to get a grasp for how light falls across form. I also finally replaced my clamp light with one that has a working clamp, so doing these studies will be that much more fruitful.

Thumbelina Concepts: The Mole

This is one of the main antagonists from my re-imagining of Thumbelina. In the original story Thumbelina becomes a curiosity and then obsession for a number of inhabitants of the fairy world. The Mole is one of those. He is a collector of rare and novel treasures, keeping to himself in his home full of valuables.

My interpretation of the Mole is as a refined but brutal predator. Like the original he is interested in Thumbelina for her exotic origin, but his tastes run more toward the cannibalistic.

Life Drawings/Onion People

These are two life drawings I did recently at the Schuler school's friday night open model sessions (the first is about 5 hours, the other 3). These are really great if you want to do a 3+ hour study from a well lit model. It'd $10 at the end of each night, and everyone's really friendly there. I'd highly recommend attending some of these for anyone in Baltimore who likes painting/drawing the figure.

Oh, and some bonus onion people I doodled too.

Speed Painting of Rachel's Desk

Speed painting of my girl friend's computer desk. I think this took about 6 hours, I might go back and refine things a little more. Its nice to have something in front of you to really dig into when you're painting, but I really need to get better at a more layered approach to painting where early marks and mistakes are allowed to build up into texture.

Here are some recent life drawings I've done. These are all done at MICA's continuing studies open model session, and are between 5-20 minutes each. I'd really like to get to a session with some shorter poses but what can you do.

Anatomy Studies

These are a bunch of anatomy studies I've done recently. There's a mix of stuff from life, imagination, books, and a couple photos. I've been looking at a large variety of anatomy books, some focusing on a sort of architectural understanding of the body, others more precisely on how the bones and muscles fit together, and others somewhere in between. If anyone wants some recommendations on anatomy and figure drawing books feel free to ask me.

This is a study I did of one of James Gurney's Dinotopia illustrations. He uses it as an example of using a controlled color gamut in his book on painting. I've been wanting to try something like this for a while, since typically I pay more attention to getting shape and drawing right than color.

re-designs of Princess Mononoke I've been developing in my sketchbook. I'll post more of these as I make them, and any finalized versions of them that I put together for my portfolio.

The first image is a rendered out version of how San appears in the movie I did just to get a sense of the original design, plus a bunch of mask ideations. after that are two pages of portrait and equipment studies (and more coffee shop people), costume thumbnails and shoes, and 4 fleshed out design directions San could go in. The final image is a few studies for Gonza, lady Eboshi's bodyguard, and a doofy sketch of Ashitaka's straw cloak.
